Cancer is still one of the diseases where much research has still to be done before achieving definitive results. New innovative and integrated therapeutic approaches can increase life expectancy and improve the life of the patients. In line with this approach, the combination of cytoreductive surgery and intraperitoneal chemotherapy-hyperthermia has been used with significant results and now some cancers can be effectively treated, including peritoneal carcinomatosis, which represents the terminal stage of adenocarcinomas of the gastrointestinal tract which responds well to this therapeutic approach. The MEDICA S.p.A EXIPER medical device has been developed for use in this field, using innovative clinical and technical solutions to provide oncological locoregional normo/hyperthermia, abdominal or thoraxic intracavity isolated limbs/organs hyperthermic chemo-perfusion treatments. Hyperthermia therapy heats cancer to fever-level temperatures improving the performance of chemotherapy as chemotherapy drugs become more potent at higher temperatures, and because heat increases the blood flow carrying the drug into the cancer. Other kind of loco-regional treatments like the STOP-FLOW thoracic blood perfusion and systemic chemotherapy find their indications for treating Pulmonary carcinoma, metastatic or primary, which remains a challenging disease with generally poor prognosis. In addition to this, Hyperthermic isolated limb perfusion is a treatment used for an aggressive form of melanoma that occurs in extremities, known as in transit metastases. This form of advanced disease usually presents itself as multiple nodules in an area surrounding the site from where the primary melanoma was excised. Currently EXIPER loco-regional treatments are available in centres of excellence for oncology care surgery, where the efficacy has been demonstrated and achieved a notable level of clinical acceptance.
