For all the above markets MEDICA S.p.A offers a leukocyte aphaeresis machine named LEUKOsmart, and a new developed leukocyte absorbent cartridge currently under CE marking in addition to catheters for Gastroenterological and Urological investigation.
 Inflammatory bowel disease like Chron morb and Ulcerative colithis frequently occurring together with other associated disease (arthritis) are chronic disease believed to have an autoimmune components and even if not mortal can severely affect the quality of life of patients.
The estimated incidence in the developed world is close to 0.3% with new patients growth factor of 0.01% annually and represent a huge part of health systems expenditure.
Currently the therapy are mainly medical based on long term administered drugs of the 5-asa family (sulphasalazine, mesalazine).
New promising but very expensive therapies based on monoclonal antibodies are now entering the market, these seems to be very effective in reducing the autoimmune response and keep the disease in the remission stage which allows a close to normal life for patients.
Another new therapeutical approach developed from the blood adsorption of leukocyte and granulocytes believed to be responsible of the inflammatory response, is a type of apheresys based on blood extracorporeal circulation.
At the core of this treatment there is a specially developed hemoperfusion cartridge capable of removing specific target substances (leukocyte and granulocyte in excess) from the patient blood.

 Thanks to a MEDICA S.p.A patent, the LIVEsmart system was developed along with its dedicated range of disposables.
LIVEsmart is an Ascitic fluid removal and protein recovery system. LIVEsmart permits the safe and efficient removal of ascitic fluid and recovery of proteins to be reinfused into the patient, thus avoiding potential risks of accidental contamination and reducing treatment costs associated with high prices of commercial albumin.
